Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the people in the videos?

The people featured in the Define: BLACK video series are everyday people from different walks of life who volunteered to share their personal stories, experiences and reflections to build the movement for racial justice.

What led to this video series?

After the horrific massacre in Charleston, our team at Awake Storytelling spent several days struggling to work, too overwhelmed with grief and anger to do anything but vent and cry. We decided to translate our intense emotions into action and asked ourselves what kind of video project we could create to change the story about race in this country.

On July 18th, a month after Charleston massacre, we created a safe space for people of color to unapologetically express and process their emotions. Define: BLACK brought people of color from different walks of life together to discuss their experience and reflect on the climate around them. The goal is to share a nuanced understanding of what it means to be black in America through personal stories and poetry.
